SATCS: A National Epidemic

I haven’t blogged in a long while and I figured to get back into the swing of things, I’d start off with something completely inflammatory and sexist. To that end, many of you may have noticed that women tend to create a lot of drama. A nice, serene setting doesn’t seem to be good enough; they do it at work, they do it at home, they do it wherever they can stir up enough of a ruckus for it to reasonably be classified as drama. I know that not all women are like this; many women are content to live perfectly happy, dramaless lives, or at least lives where they only have to deal with the drama that is presented to them.

But, other women are not so lucky, and I don’t think it’s their fault. I’ve come up with a theory about the modern female craving for drama: Women who tend to seek out drama are suffering from Sex And The City Syndrome (SACTS for short). This life-altering sickness is brought about by watching a variety of pop culture movies and television shows wherein progressive, career oriented women find themselves unable to sustain lasting relationships, typified by the seminal HBO show Sex And The City, a key archetype of this form of entertainment.

The main thing to remember about SATCS is that it is not life threatening, though it can alter the inflicted’s quality of life greatly. The second most important thing to remember about the disease is that its victims are unwitting participants in the madness it inflicts. Indeed, SATCS is brought about by the unconscious part of the brain viewing an overabundance of Sex And The City type programming. The unconscious part of the mind sees the impressive careers of the characters in these programs, their fancy designer clothes, their highly exciting (and fictional) lives, and is unable to cope with the disparity between their own status as a normal human being and these highly stylized fiction characters.

Unable to resolve this difference, the unconscious mind, unbeknown to the conscious mind, works to find a way to create this fictional life within its own reality. Realizing that it will be unable to reasonably attain these desirable stylized elements, the impressive career, fancy clothes, stylish setting and surrounding, the unconscious mind clings to the one aspect of these fictional lives it can reasonably create: the drama.

Yes, no matter how paltry one’s reality, drama can always be created. And this is the insidious nature of SATCS: with the creation of real world drama, the unconscious mind finds a resolution between the difference in reality and the Sex And The City archetype, creating peace in the unconscious, yet disruption in the life of the conscious victim, and all those around her.

So, the next time a woman in your life irrationally creates drama, disrupting both the peace of her own life and of those close to her, do not engage in her temporary and tragic lunacy, for she is as much a victim as anyone else. Simply break her television and DVD player and make sure she doesn’t go to any movies, such as the upcoming Confessions Of A Shopaholic. While SATCS can never be cured, it can, with time and severe doses of reality, be treated, allowing the inflicted to live relatively drama free lives.
