Nice way to start Fall Break.
A few weeks ago on this blog I wrote an open letter to Ben Stiller, imploring him to occasionally make a dramatic movie. At this point, I would like to retract the entirety of that letter; after seeing The Heartbreak Kid I realize that there is no hope for Ben Stiller. Travis, Mike, Ashley and I saw it tonight-and I feel I must point out that Ashley and Mike choose the movie-and the only enjoyment I took out of it was in all of us making fun of it. It was without a doubt one of the worst movies I've ever seen; it was offensive and unnecessary on so many levels, blatantly racist in many parts, and ridiculously gross for no apparent reason. Honestly, if Ben Stiller can read that script and make that movie, there really is no chance that he's ever going to be able to redeem himself as a human being. But what do I know, the guy in the seat in front of me was laughing his ass off the whole time. As far as I could tell he thought it was the best movie ever. Aside from the reprehensible movie, today was a pretty freaking great day. Travis and I joined Ashley and her freind Emma at The Jewish Mother to eat lunch and watch a Blues Battle of the Bands, though it was roundly decided that what we were listening to was decidedly not-Blues. Travis and I hadn't met Emma before, though Ashley speaks of her quite often, and she seems like a lovely young woman and I can absolutely see why anyone would want to hang out with her. After lunch Mike joined us and we sat out on the beach for a few hours. It was neat because we were there at the only time I really like being at the beach, right around sunset. It rarely ever occurs to me to do so, which is ridiculous since I live like ten minutes from the beach, but one of my favorite things in life is to sit on the beach at sunset and just look out at the ocean. One time I was doing that down in Nags Head and this family on a walk came by and about an hour later when they came by again on their way back on of them asked me if I was lost and I laughed and said, "No, I'm right where I mean to be." We also got to watch a wedding on the beach tonight, which Mike got oddly serious over. It was pretty interesting, he took some pictures with his phone and when they went off over on the boardwalk for the reception he sort of wandered over there and looked around a bit. I knew he was an old romantic, but I didn't know a wedding would affect him so much. Anyway, after a bit we went to Lynnhaven and saw that shittastic movie. Afterwards we went to Ruby Tuesdays for dinner and our waiter Scott was pretty damn cool. The guy was almost doing standup and he was pretty freaking hilarious. So yeah, today was pretty great and what was even better is that I was aware of how great it was the whole time. That's pretty neat.
